Our story

The Handmade Paper Institute (HMPI) Pune, an initiative under the Maharashtra State Khadi & village Industries Board, are the pioneers in manufacturing nature-friendly handmade paper in India since the past 80 years. This renowned institute, the brainchild of Mahatma Gandhi and scientist KB Joshi was officially inaugurated in August 1940 by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. The intent was to introduce the method of paper making out of waste material and strengthen the economy and employment to the Khadi & Village Industries thereby improving livelihood. We have the pioneers in manufacturing handmade papers since 1940. This re- stablished, revived institute is now known as Pune Handmade Papers(PHP).

A vision towards a sustainable tomorrow

We believe, by adopting the usage of handmade paper, we can contribute towards saving our forests & environment. Each paper is completely nature-friendly and made out of waste material like white cotton rags and is 100% wood-free.

Our motto of ‘save our trees-use handmade paper’ not only encourages a sustainable way of living. The entire manufacturing process is completely nature-friendly and consumes minimum electricity thereby reducing environmental pollution.
