The result: the first documented collection of carpets with an entirely Indian-inspired aesthetic. | Our LegacyThe Obeetee story began in 1920, in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh, India. For centuries, artisans have woven a long and distinguished reputation for excellence in this small town on the Grand Trunk Road. Shortly after WWI, three British gentlemen—F.H. Oakley, F.H. Bowden, and J.A.L. Taylor—recognized the artistry in the rug-making heart of India and gathered the finest local craftsman under the banner of Obeetee (O-B-T). | A 500 Year Old TraditionThe tradition of carpet-weaving in this region can be traced as far back as the 16th century, during the reign of the Mughal Emperor, Akbar. Artisans travelling down from Persia via the Grand Trunk Road brought with them the intricate art of hand-knotting carpets and passed their skills down to the craftsmen here. Over the past five centuries, the artisans of Bhadohi have watched their fathers weave, and then apprenticed to become gifted weavers themselves. You might say that the tradition of carpet-weaving is truly in their blood. |
Our carpets are meant to last generations and we’re committed to ensuring that the environment does, too. At our factory we only use natural and azo - free dyes in our designs. We use recycled water to dye our yarns and purify wastewater for reuse in irrigation. 30% of our energy requirements met by Solar panels that are installed on the roof of our factory. This initiative has resulted in a reduction of carbon di oxide emissions by 2.10 million lbs per year which is equivalent to saving of 44,000 trees in a year.

As a testament to this commitment, Obeetee is the first company in the handmade rug industry to secure the prestigious SA 8000 standard—the most recognized global benchmark for human rights protections in the workplace.
