Downcut refers to the direction of the spiral;Downcut bits typically leave a cleaner upper edge to the material cut, but are less efficient at removing chips and dust.
It is great for cutting shallow dados, rabbets, and visible slots. When cutting dados or grooves with a down cut bit, be sure to slow the feed rate to allow more time for chip removal.
