Q&A

Q: What are the benefits of having my Arlo camera connected to a base station?

A: The SmartHub or base station helps protect your footage by adding a secure, personal network to your router. The base hub also helps regulate WiFi traffic, improve battery life to your cameras, and comes with local storage. (USB devices are sold separately).

Q: Do I need an Arlo subscription to record footage?

A: No, you do not need an Arlo subscription. All Arlo recordings can be stored locally if you have a USB device. Just plug that into the back of the SmartHub to store footage locally. Once the USB device is close to full, the Arlo app will notify you.

Q: What happens if my internet goes down?

A: If the Arlo cameras and SmartHub / Base station are powered on, and your internet goes down, the cameras continue to record to the USB device.

Q: How do I view videos saved on a local storage USB device?

A: All Arlo video recordings can be stored to the cloud with an Arlo Smart Plan or subscription, or you can connect a USB device to your Arlo base station or SmartHub for a second location to store recordings locally for free.

NOTE: Arlo cameras can be placed up to 300ft (90m) away from the Smarthub. The maximum line of sight range of 300 feet is reduced by each wall, ceiling, or other major obstruction between the camera and the base station.

Arlo's VMB4540 allows you to livestream up to 5 cameras without a subscription. To have access to local storage, a compatible USB device is required. To livestream 6 or more cameras on the same SmartHub, you will have to pause one of your Arlo cameras or purchase an Arlo Secure Plan. See manufacturers website for more details. Only automatically triggered recordings are saved locally to the connected USB device. Manual recordings are only saved to the cloud.

To view videos saved on a local storage USB device, you must remove the USB device from the base station. Cloud recording is still enabled, but if you do not want to interrupt USB recording while you view videos, set up a second USB device for USB recording.

Requirements for Local Data Storage:

USB 2.0 compatible flash drive or external hard drive with a Type-A connector and at least 16GB of available space.

Warning: Do not use the Arlo Base Station or SmartHub to format storage devices with more than 2 TB of storage capacity. The Base Station formats storage devices using the FAT32 file system, which supports a maximum of 2 TB of storage space. The formatting process reduces the capacity of larger storage devices to a maximum of 2 TB.

To view videos saved on a local storage USB device:

  1. Launch the Arlo app or log in to your Arlo account.
  2. Select Settings > My Devices and tap or click on the Arlo base station or SmartHub to which your USB device is connected.
  3. Under Local Storage, tap or click storage settings.
  4. Tap or click on the USB device that has the videos that you want to view.
Note: Connected USB devices are numbered in the order that they are inserted into the base station. If USB devices are not already named, the first device inserted is called USB Device 1 and the second one is called USB Device 2. These numbers do not necessarily match the port numbers on the base station.
  5. Tap or click Safely Eject USB Device.
  6. Wait for the Unmounting USB device progress message to close, then remove the USB device from your Arlo base station.
Note: If another USB device is still connected to your Arlo Pro base station and USB recording is turned on, recording is automatically enabled on that USB device.
  7. Insert the USB device into a USB port on your computer.
  8. Wait for the USB device to appear in the available drives on your computer, then open the drive folder to view the files on your USB device.
  9. Open the arlo folder.
Recorded videos are saved in this folder in MP4 format. Video files are named according to this system: camera serial number_video number_date_video clip tag. Dates are in the format YYYYMMDD.
Note: If you are unable to play MP4 files on your computer, update your media player software to the latest version and try again. You can also download a free universal multimedia player, such as VLC.
