Satyagraha (2013) is a political drama directed by Prakash Jha, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Ajay Devgn. The star cast also includes Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, and Manoj Bajpai. Inspired by the Anna Hazare movement, the movie targets the rampant corruption in political and bureaucratic circles. Amitabh Bachchan plays the Anna Hazare-like role of Dwarka Anand, who inspires a huge political movement to clean up corruption in politics. Dwarka Anand is a retired teacher, an idealistic man with strong convictions. His son, Nikhil Anand, is an engineer with a highway construction company. Nikhil is killed when he tries to stand in the way of corruption that affects a construction project. The government announces compensation for the young man’s death, to help his family. However, his widow finds it difficult to get the money, as many hurdles are put in her way. Once, in a confrontation with the bureaucrats, an angered Dwarka slaps an official and is jailed. This sets off the chain of events that results in a huge protest movement. Nikhil’s friend, Manav, a businessman, decides to help Dwarka. He organises protests and draws attention to the situation using a journalist named Yasmin and a student activist, Arjun. The movement succeeds in freeing Dwarka, who then demands that the district clears all pending compensations in the region. Dwarka now becomes the head of a movement that reflects the public anger against corruption. The idea spreads like wildfire through the use of social media and because of the media coverage of the commotion that it is causing. The corrupt minister who was behind Nikhil’s murder decides that he should put an end to the movement that is gaining momentum each day. He decides on direct action and a drastic step to stop the Satyagrahis, who are using Gandhian means of peaceful but forceful protest.
